Lighthouse Challenge Dates, Information and Cancellations

Martha's Vineyard Challenge will be held June 11 - 13, 2010. Please go to www.mvy.com and click on Lighthouse Challenge for more information.

Midcoast Maine Lighthouse Challenge will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 26 & 27 and will include the same lighthouses as last year - Pemaquid Point, Marshall Point, Owls Head, Rockland Breakwater, Grindle Point, Fort Point and Dice Head - as well as the Maine Lighthouse Museum.  We have endeavored to extend the number of hours that most sites will be open for touring and climbing. The time allowed for touring the USCG TACKLE - a bonus challenge - has been extended to six hours, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.  Additionally, our second bonus challenge - the lighthouse sunset cruise - that was held on Saturday evening last year will be enjoyed this year on Friday evening, June 25, departing from Port Clyde at 4:30 p.m. and will include views of Franklin Island, Monhegan Island, Two Bush, White Head, Southern (Tenants Harbor) and Marshall Point.  Moving the cruise to Friday will allow more time to complete the challenge on Saturday and Sunday!

More detailed information about the Midcoast Maine Lighthouse Challenge, including ordering tickets for the cruise, can be found at the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse (sponsor of the event) web site, using this link...

Canceled Lighthouse Challenges

Long Island Challenge

The Long Island Lighthouse Challenge has been canceled until further notice. Please see the information below which is from their web site.

The Board of Directors of the Long Island Chapter has announced that there will not be a Long Island Lighthouse Challenge in 2010. Unfortunately, we have been unable to attract enough volunteers to support the large planning effort and operational staffing required for such a large event. It is hoped that the Challenge can be revived in subsequent years. We wish to express our appreciation to all who participated in the challenge weekends and those who invested their time and effort to assure the success of the challenges over the past five years.

Maryland Challenge

Due to the poor economy and lack of State and County funding the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge has been canceled. I have been informed they hope to come back in 2011 with a bigger and better challenge.

Lights Across the Border Challenge

Has been canceled. Plans are to come back in 2012.

It is very sad to see these challenges canceled. Hopefully their plans to return in the next couple years will come to fruition. Without funds and volunteers there is not much that can be done.

Tom
