Lighthouses, Hot Chocolate & You
January 14-15,2012 Itinerary

NELL Members,

We are within a month of our trip to New Hampshire and I hope all is well with you all. We seem to be ready with all the plans so it is time to solidify times and itinerary. We meet at the Holiday Inn Portsmouth, 300 Woodbury Avenue, Portsmouth, NH. This hotel is right off the traffic circle at Route 95. We will be leaving at 9:15AM from the parking lot to Fort Constitution for the 15 minute drive. PARKING IS LIMITED SO PLAN ON CARPOOLING. The lighthouse is on an active CG base so parking is limited. Jeremy D'Entremont will give us a tour of both the lighthouse and the fort. We will be able to climb and those collecting the US Lighthouse Society passport stamps can get their stamp.

At approximately 11:20AM we will travel to the John Paul Jones House, 43 Middle Street, Portsmouth, NH. Here Sandra has graciously offered to open the house and answer any questions we have. They have a self guided tour so people can wander at their leisure.

From here we will travel over the bridge into Maine to get our best view of Whaleback Lighthouse and a former Lightsaving Station whose name escapes me at the moment. The best route is to get back onto Interstate 95 North and then take the exit to Route 103. By now we are probably getting hungry and I recommend Captain and Patty's, 90 Pepperrell Road, Kittery Point, ME (207-439-3655). This establishment comes highly recommended and is on our route of travel to Fort Foster our destination for the view of Whaleback. It is recommended that we call ahead if you plan on stopping for lunch.

In the same area is Fort McClary Historical Park, ME for those wish to explore the area for some more pictures.

The LHHC&Y will be back at the Holiday Inn at approximately 5:00PM.

There are many sights to see in the area. The Wentworth Hotel is a refurbished Historical Site and the scene of the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth ending the Russo-Japanese War of 1905. The downtown walk has been offered by Sandra and currently only 3 people have asked to be included so if you are interested let me know by e-mail or phone (978-809-7133).

Looking forward to see you in January.
