A Few Carolina Lighthouses by Ron Drummer

Traveling down routes 13 and 17 on Wednesday, October 16, 2002, we ended up in Edenton, North Carolina.  Since the weather was rainy and overcast it made it easier to bypass lighthouses such as Assateague, Cape Charles, Cape Henry, etc.  While checking into the hotel that evening, we asked the desk clerk for directions to Roanoke River lighthouse.  Her response was that she had lived there all her life and there weren’t any lighthouses remaining in Edenton.  An elderly gentleman, who overheard our conversation, offered his help.  After reviewing the map in Roger Bansemer’s book, he gave us directions but indicated that he didn’t think the lighthouse was there any longer.  His directions brought us to a location where we could see only a small portion of the lantern room.  We doubled back over the bridge to the other side of the inlet and were able to take this photo from a private driveway.

The following morning, while Shirley was having breakfast, I  took this photo from the backyard of a rental property.

Thursday afternoon we took the ferry to Smith Island and were able to climb the Bald Head light.

On two of our previous trips there the lighthouse had been closed.  That evening while having supper in Southport, we took a photo of Oak Island light.  Leaving the tab for Shirley to pay, I ran outside and took the sunset over Oak Island.
